The American Clock by Arthur Miller

Copy_of_AMERICAN_CLOCK_playbill_3

Victoria School of the Arts is thrilled to bring to the stage The American Clock by Arthur Miller.  The play, based on Miller’s childhood memories and Studs Terkel’s Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression is a “mural for the theatre” made up of stories and songs to evoke memories of a period of history that shaped much of the master playwright’s work.

The play built on scenes that range from comic to deeply poignant, invites us all to consider the strength of the human spirit when faced with the greatest of hardships.  Written in 1980, looking back on the 1930’s, this memory play takes on new and insightful meaning in light of the global economic realities of the 21st Century.

While Arthur Miller is best known for such masterpieces as Death of a Salesman and The Crucible, director Greg Dowler-Coltman feels that “in Miller’s later works, including The American Clock, we see him venture into new territory in terms of structure and storytelling convention, while continuing to explore one of his signature themes; the failure of the American Dream and the resultant loss of innocence.”  “This is a tale about the resilience of the human spirit” says grade twelve student  actor Stephen Tracey, who portrays the show’s patriarch.  He believes that it serves to “remind us that struggle is nature’s way of strengthening.”

Since the beginning of January, 35 actors, musicians and technicians in Grades 10 - 12 have been in rehearsal as a part of the school’s Theatre Performance class.    The Victoria School production of The American Clock hits the stage for a limited run from March 18-20 at 7:00 pm.  For more information or tickets, please visit our Box Office or call 780-426-3010.
